Overview
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is conducting a nationwide initiative to improve the health and safety of long term care (LTC) residents and beneficiaries and their families by establishing a program for screening prospective direct access employees seeking employment with LTC facilities and providers. Participants in the National Background Check Program, created under the Affordable Care Act, presently include CMS, States that have met CMS requirements, and CNA, a non-profit research and analysis company providing technical assistance to CMS and the States. These organizations are helping LTC facilities and providers develop methods to conduct criminal background checks on job applicants.
